The Second Apology and Justin’s Martyrdom
This episode contains Justin Martyr's second apology and an account of his martyrdom. These two are combined into one episode because they both highlight practical ways in which the Roman legal system was used to persecute Christians.
Justin's second apology, much like the first, was written to Roman leaders and attempted to secure justice and cease the persecution of Christians. While the first apology argued in somewhat abstract terms, this letter provides specific examples of how persecution was accomplished using the legal apparatus of the empire. In exposing this injustice, Justin is keenly aware that he also exposes himself to the same dangers.
This expectation was realized in the second work appended here, which recounts Justin’s martyrdom. Because of a Cynic, Crescens, Justin and several other followers of Christ were brought before a Roman prefect. Refusing to recognize the Roman gods and declaring their allegiance to Christ, they were, by Roman law, scourged and beheaded. Like Polycarp and Ignatius before, through this evil Justin also achieves the crown of life promised to those who follow Christ until death.
