The Seventh Council of Carthage
Here we find a rather interesting historical work - the record of the Seventh Council of Carthage. Convening in September 258, some eighty-five bishops from Africa, Numidia, and Mauritania assembled to declare their position on the rebaptism of heretics. This subject appeared in many of the epistles from the previous episode and, indeed, it was some of these which led to the council’s formation. The proceedings are fairly self-descriptive and, while most of the assembled bishops favored rebaptism of those who had previously joined heretical sects, it is noteworthy that several expressed the opposite opinion.
